In the 19th century pineapples were an extremely fashionable fruit. Only the richest people could afford to grow them as in the British climate they required special greenhouses and a lot of attention from skilled gardeners. Having pineapples as part of the decoration on a dining table was a striking display of wealth and status. Many households hired pineapples from other country houses especially for such occasions in order to impress their guests.
